Loft, or not so much?

This week we pass round the loft’s specific distinctive features. What’s the difference between a loft and an attic, what kind of architectural elements strengthen the loft-lifestyle.

The loft expression came into vogue at the beginning of the 2000s. According to the strict interpretation from the dictionary “The loft is an apartment that is in a former workshop, warehouse, or factory building…” So basically we understand under this word a commercial or industrial place that is modified into a house, which is at least 300 m2, with a few division walls.

1.The attic really counts as a loft, if earlier functioned as a warehouse. Otherwise, the right definition would be rather a studio or gallery. The artKRAFT as well is located on an attic, which earlier was the warehouse of a chair factory.

2.The loft has often high floor-to-ceiling height, is 3 to 6 meters high, and moreover sometimes is much, much more.

3.And if we have a beautiful, high space, taking advantage of the opportunities, we can build in one or more internal levels. By this the living space can be increased, the leading up stairs in turn strengthen the home’s sight as well.

4.In days of old at the industrial establishments little bearing wall held the slab and the roofs. Under the slab often beautiful ironwork ran through, which beside the support function in sight as well is beautiful. It’s like as if we would look at a piece of the Eiffel tower… In our days this is a big challenge, but the metal-, concrete or wood supporting pillars almost enchant the whole space.

5.In the factories, workshops anno the light was provided by huge windows. Preserving these beautiful, many layered windows or the special transom-windows our loft home as well is flooded with light.

6.In lofts often the living space’s functions are not separated, the living room-bedroom-kitchen is merged. But this wouldn’t function in a family with children, there are needed some divestitures.

7.The lofts mostly stand in industrial environments, this way we can see from our window such special architectural elements, like a factory chimney or a port.

8.In the lofts is practical to keep the original flooring, or in an authentic manner, concrete, old strip floor is the ideal choice.

9.Feel free to start its furnishing. A pinball, punching bag, motor or bicycle on the ceiling…feel free to use your imagination.

In your opinion why is a loft a loft?
